Goin’ Back to New Orleans!

Paul and I are excited for the annual New Orleans reunion of Pistol Pete & Popgun Paul at the Hi Ho Lounge in just a few weeks on February 1, 2012. We will be on double bill with our dear friends The New Dopey Singers, one of whose members, Kathleen Kraus, I have known literally since we were in swaddling clothes. I will also be attending the Faerie Carnival and Imperial Coronation Ball, so it promises to be quite a week!

This is the busiest performance schedule I’ve had in a long time! Next week I am at Dixon Place with Cohen & Sturman, I’m playing in San Francisco in October, then a gig in Brooklyn in November. So you’ve got more chances than ever to catch a show of mine. I’m excited for next week – Davi and I actually wrote a song together just for this gig. It was a wonderful experience co-writing with her and I hope we’ll be writing more songs together. Hope everyone had a great summer – I sure did!

Hey folks! I’m super excited about my latest collaboration with NYC theater and dance artist Davi Cohen! We’ve been singing together since May of this year and have done two mini-shows since then. We had great fun, singing some of my originals such as “I’ll Be Your Horsie” and “I Can Hardly Wait” and some cover songs such as “Somewhere Different Now” (a beautiful song by Girlyman) and “I’m Going Home” (from Rocky Horror). We’ ve gone ahead and booked our first full-length show on September 21 at Dixon Place! That means we’ve got to get crackin’ learning some new songs together so we have a whole hour of music to do for you that night. Watch out world for Cohen & Sturman!

Dixon Place HOT! Festival

I’m excited and honored to be a part of HOT! Festival this year at Dixon Place in the Lower East Side on Thursday, June 30th. I had a wonderful time there in January, and this time I’m pretty sure there won’t be six inches of snow! I will be joined by a singer-songwriter I’ve met this past year named Mark Golamco, whose music I quite like. We’re planning to do a couple of numbers together too! There may be other guests as well, I don’t know yet. Hope you have a wonderful Pride Weekend and if you’re in New York this summer I encourage you to check out some of the other HOT! Festival offerings.

I am finally catching up to a 21st-century kind of speed. I just finished this song and have immediately put it up on YouTube for your enjoyment. I started writing these lyrics years ago and the store referenced is the Whole Foods on Tchoupitoulas in Uptown New Orleans.

After being busy with other things (having fun, chasing men and sometimes licking wounds), there are some gigs coming up! I, Pete, am headlining a solo gig in NYC at Dixon Place in the lounge on January 26. This is a very laid back, atmospheric venue that reminded me immediately of New Orleans the first time I saw a show there. It will have no cover (rare in New York City) and reasonably priced drinks, including delicious flavored San Pellegrino for you non-drinkers. Mmmm. There will be a special guest or two that I may tell you about beforehand or I may just surprise you. (Or I may be surprised myself!)

THEN, I will be going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans for my first time since 2005! I’m very excited, and Paul and I will do our annual New Orleans reunion show on Ash Wednesday (March 9) at our favorite venue the All Ways Lounge.

2010 has been one of the best years of my whole life, thanks to having so many wonderful friends to share it with, and especially getting to visit with and play gigs with Paul on three different occasions. Sending you the warmest wishes for wonderful 2011!

I am finally on YouTube. We here at PeteAndPaul.com are not known for our lightning speed and sound business plans, but we do eventually try to get around to things. For your listening and viewing pleasure, captured at Julius’ in the Village in late July, we now have a clip of “Anal Anthem” (which we’ve been doing since 1994 but never recorded) and two other songs! A great night at The Duplex

Sunday’s show at The Duplex was a lot of fun! Thanks so much to everyone who came out and helped make it a big success. I was inspired to play “Fun to Be Fem” for the first time in over a decade! I was very gratified to receive this review from guitarist/producer Robert Urban:

“Last night we attended our current featured artist – Pete Sturman‘s – sold out solo show at the Duplex here in NYC (my first time seeing him live). A remarkable troubadour/wordsmith – beloved by his audience. Friends and fans called out requests from his extensive catalog of gay-themed ballads, anthems and comedic songs. And Pete graciously pulled ‘em out of his hat on the spot. The crowd seemed to hang on his every word. A lovely vibe was shared by all.

“All during the show I kept thinking to myself: if ever there was a Bob Dylan for the gay community, this guy’s the one.”

New Orleans Report

My trip to New Orleans was wonderful. The Thing About It was really great! While it was not without its flaws (that’s the nature of a workshop, to try things out), it was really fascinating to see and hear the songs done by actors and to see how well the music worked in that context. Bookwriter Brian Sands, director Holly-Anne Ruggiero and actors Ian Hoch, Jamie Wax, Kenneth Thompson and Cliff Thompson should all be proud of themselves. The accompaniment by “Popgun” Paul Cowgill and Galen Marquis was great and it was a joy to watch them bonding together musically on stage. It seems that many of the involved parties would like to see more happen with this musical, so for now let’s just keep our fingers crossed.

The workshop ended with a matinee on Sunday, January 31 and that night Paul and I convened in the All Ways Lounge for a special 3-hour set of many requests and some new songs of mine done solo. Ian and Kenneth (from TTAI) came up and sang “Angel’s Wings” and “Party Zone” with us, then Ian duetted with me on “Tea”. We also did a couple of sets backed up by Galen on keys and our old friend Kathleen Kraus on upright bass. It rocked and has got us thinking we should do an album as a foursome.

Somehow the Pistol/Popgun machine keeps chuggin’ despite our being in different cities, and I believe that somehow we always will.
